Acoustic Treatment 101: Getting the Best Sound From Your Room

Why Untreated Rooms Sound Wrong

Even the best speaker system will sound harsh, boomy, or muddled in an untreated room. Hard, parallel walls reflect sound repeatedly, creating echo and uneven bass that no amount of equaliser tweaking can fully fix. Acoustic treatment addresses the room itself, not just the equipment inside it.

Absorption vs Reflection

Soft, dense panels placed at key reflection points absorb sound energy, reducing echo and tightening up dialogue and detail. The goal isn't to eliminate every reflection, a completely "dead" room can sound unnatural, but to control where and how sound bounces around the space.

Bass Traps and Room Modes

Low frequencies behave very differently to the rest of the audible range. They build up in room corners and create "room modes," points where bass is either exaggerated or almost cancelled out depending on where you sit. Bass traps, typically thicker, denser panels placed in corners, tame these buildups and even out low-end response across the seating area.

First Reflection Points

The side walls and ceiling points where sound first bounces before reaching your ears have an outsized effect on clarity. Treating these specific spots, rather than covering a wall randomly, delivers most of the audible improvement for the least material.

Diffusion

In larger rooms, diffusion panels scatter sound rather than absorbing it outright, keeping a room feeling lively and spacious rather than flat. It's often used alongside absorption rather than instead of it.

Getting It Right

Acoustic treatment is one of the few upgrades where professional measurement genuinely pays for itself. Treating the wrong spots, or over-treating a room, can do as much harm as doing nothing at all. We measure each room before recommending a treatment plan, rather than applying a generic template regardless of the space.
